Join during AACVPR National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week 2020, February 9-15, to celebrate the life-saving impact of cardiac rehabilitation to honor the role of cardiac rehabilitation in reducing the potentially devastating effects of heart disease and improving quality of life for patients and their families. Cardiac Rehabilitation Week, initiated by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), coincides with both Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month in an effort to draw greater national attention to heart health. This year’s theme, “New Start Better Heart,” honors the patients, families, and healthcare professionals who are dedicated to giving cardiac rehabilitation patients a new start.

Cardiac Rehab is a medically monitored outpatient program administered by a multidisciplinary team including registered nurses, registered dietitians, exercise specialists and health educators. Core components include: supervised exercise training, behavior modification aimed at risk factor reduction and control of metabolic disorders such as diabetes, and obesity. The program length is typically 36 sessions over a 12 week period and is generally covered by most health insurance plans. The attending physician may refer a patient up to 12 months following a qualifying event such as:

• Myocardial Infarction
• Angina Decubitus
• Other and unspecified angina pectoris
• Other specified forms of chronic ischemic heart disease
• Post-surgical status – aortocoronary bypass
• PTCA/related procedure
• Valvular repair or replacement
• Heart transplant
• Cardiomyopathy
• Arrhythmia

Nearly 100 employees and community members participated in Murray-Calloway County Hospital’s Go Red free health screening, and heart health education event. Attendees were also given the opportunity to meet the Interventional Cardiology team and Dr. Ali Homayuni, Interventional Cardiologist.

Spring Creek Health care recently hosted a winter ball, for their residents and families. The residents were pampered throughout the day with having their hair fixed, makeup done, and dressed up in fancy attire. They attended a social hours with hors’ d’oeurvres and mocktails, and then attended the ball where they danced and socialized with staff and one another.

The following queens and kings were crowned during festivities: Opie Thornton, Wanda Beasley, Bill McCuiston and James Burkeen.

Several volunteers helped with the event including the Special Olympic Athletes, Murray State students, and Mary Kay consultants.

On January 15, 2020, Murray-Calloway County Hospital and Anthem, Inc. reached a contractual agreement that will allow Anthem insurance subscribers to remain in-network with the local facility.

The largest insurance company in the nation, Anthem has approximately 40 million subscribers.  The hospital and Anthem have been in negotiations for several months.  As part of typical contract negotiations, the hospital sent a notice of termination of their existing contract to Anthem in August 2019 that was to become effective on February 15, 2020. Anthem and MCCH have since reached a mutual agreement.   

“As indicated from the very start, we view Anthem as a long-term partner with our hospital. We understand there were people in the community that experienced some level of angst about the uncertainty of this process so we are pleased to announce successful culmination of our negotiations well ahead of the potential termination.  From the outset, we were quite confident that we would reach an agreement that was in the best interests of both organizations and most importantly, for the patients we collectively serve,” said Jerry Penner, CEO, Murray-Calloway County Hospital.
